We are staying in Woolloomooloo. If you want to know how to say that, here's a clue
Up the hill from us is Kings Cross and, we are told, one part is a bit dodgy at night, much as the other Kings Cross used to be. I think that perhaps that is on the change as it seemed very yuppie to us. Parts of Woolloomooloo have been knocked down and replaced by modern housing, destroying the old communities, but some lovely old houses still exist.
and we passed through these gardens by the Australia Museum.
and noticed this flower, which stood at least 6 feet tall, so no chance of a photo from above.
We called in to St Mary's cathedral, which is very splendid with great 19th century stain glass windows and features this statue of Australia's first catholic saint, Mary MacKillop who was canonised in 2010. Obviously it has to be recent, that is an iPad that the boy is using isn't it?
Sydney has a monorail, which may help traffic congestion, but looks ghastly

Today, November 1st is Melbourne Cup day, the equivalent of the Grand National and Ascot combined, we are told. We saw many women dressed smartly and wearing hats in town.
After an excellent lunch in a Japanese sushi restaurant we headed for home. En route we called into the ANZAC memorial which has a star in the ceiling for each person who was in the forces up to the time of the building of the memorial in 1934. We have been moved by the world war memorials throughout our trip where tiny communities like Yamba lost large numbers of young men, something that unites Australia, the UK and France. We bought our poppies ready for November the eleventh.
